Brigadier General Timothy M. Opurum, Commander of the 1 Brigade Headquarters in Gusau, has reiterated the Nigerian military’s dedication to eradicating terrorism in the North West region. This assertion was made during a focused interview with Defence Correspondents, led by Group Captain A.I. Bukar from the Directorate of Defence Media Operations in Abuja, held at the 1 Brigade Headquarters in Gusau, Zamfara State.

During the meeting, General Opurum underscored the heightened intensity of military operations, which have considerably diminished the capabilities of terrorist factions in the area. He remarked that the recent tactics employed by these groups, such as the use of improvised explosive devices (IEDs), indicate their desperation in response to ongoing military pressure.
“The terrorists are under significant strain. Their reliance on IEDs signifies their defeat, yet it will not deter our resolve. We will persist until we eradicate them from the entire North West,” he asserted with conviction.
He further issued a grave warning to those who have not yet surrendered, highlighting the military’s successful elimination of prominent terrorist leaders, including Halibuzu Sugudu, whose removal has instilled fear within the insurgent ranks.
“My message is unequivocal: surrender or face neutralization. We are pursuing them relentlessly, and there will be no refuge,” General Opurum cautioned.
The Commander emphasized the necessity of cooperation among the military, government, and local communities in addressing insecurity. He pointed out that military actions alone represent only a portion of what is needed to secure lasting peace.
“Security functions like a three-legged stool—the military, the government, and the populace must collaborate. Without this equilibrium, genuine security remains elusive,” he articulated.
General Opurum also acknowledged advancements in infrastructure development, particularly in road construction.
“It is essential for enhancing security in the region.
He conveyed a sense of hope that these initiatives, along with the continuous military operations, would lead to a more stable and secure atmosphere.
The visit by Defence Correspondents provided a unique opportunity to observe the front lines of Nigeria’s battle against insecurity, highlighting the commitment and determination of the armed forces in protecting the nation.
