The Nigerian military has announced a significant crackdown on terrorism and insecurity across the country, marking a major boost to national security and a milestone in its fight against terrorism and oil theft. In 2024, the military recovered stolen crude oil valued at an impressive N57 billion.

At a media briefing held at the Defence Headquarters (DHQ) on Thursday, the Director of Defence Media Operations, Major General Edward Buba, highlighted the military’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the nation. He reported that the military had neutralized 8,034 terrorists, arrested 11,623 suspects, and rescued 6,376 hostages since January.

RegentAfrica Times understands that the remarkable achievements demonstrate the military’s relentless efforts to combat insecurity and protect Nigerian citizens.

Breaking down the recoveries, the DHQ noted: “4,053 AK-47 rifles, 1,123 locally fabricated guns, and 731 Dane guns were among the items seized.”

Additionally, troops have recovered large quantities of stolen crude oil, as well as illegally refined Automotive Gas Oil (AGO) and Dual Purpose Kerosene (DPK).

The military’s successes extend beyond counter-terrorism operations. “Troops have also recovered an impressive array of weapons, including 8,216 arms, 211,459 rounds of ammunition, and various other items. These recoveries have significantly diminished the capabilities of terrorist groups, making it increasingly difficult for them to carry out attacks,” stated the DHQ.

In terms of disrupting oil theft operations, Major General Buba reported that troops had recovered 53,101,430 litres of stolen crude oil, 9,179,181 litres of illegally refined AGO, and 90,595 litres of DPK. These efforts have led to the prevention of oil theft worth an estimated N57 billion.

Major General Buba emphasized the military’s commitment to maintaining pressure on terrorist groups through ongoing operations across the country. He noted that troops had faced various threats in five active theatres of operations: the North East, North West, North Central, South-South, and South East.

The Nigerian Armed Forces have conducted aggressive campaigns targeting insurgents and disrupting criminal networks. These efforts have included clearing terrorist hideouts, dismantling operational bases, and denying criminals safe-havens.

Major General Buba stressed that military operations have made terrorist and criminal activities increasingly untenable.

As the year comes to a close, the Armed Forces remain dedicated to consolidating their gains. He encouraged citizens to support security agencies in maintaining the progress achieved, reiterating the Armed Forces’ commitment to defending Nigeria and protecting its people from all forms of security threats.
