The Nigerian women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has etched its name in history by becoming the first African team, irrespective of gender, to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of the Olympic basketball competition and the phenomenal accomplishment stands as a testament to their unwavering dedication, relentless hard work, and impeccable teamwork.
While the team encountered hurdles along the way, they surged back after a defeat to host nation France with a remarkable upset victory over Canada, ranked fifth globally.
Led by Ezinne Kalu’s 21 points, Pallas Kunaiyi-Akpanah’s 7 rebounds, and Promise Amukamara’s 6 assists, D’Tigress clinched a sensational 79-70 win, showcasing their resilience and prowess on the international stage.
This milestone achievement traces back to the team’s inception at the 1974 AfroBasket Women’s Championship in Tunisia. Having clinched the Women’s Afrobasket Championship six times, including four consecutive titles from 2017 to 2023, most recently in Kigali, Rwanda, this triumph adds a shimmering jewel to their illustrious history.
Team captain Amy Okonkwo attributed their remarkable turnaround to a pivotal half-time discussion that reignited their focus and drive. “I’m immensely proud of us. The last game didn’t go as planned, and even in the first half, we were not executing our game plan. We had a heart-to-heart and realized it was either win or go home, and we unanimously decided to persevere,” she exalted.
Nigerian Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, conveyed his congratulations to the D’Tigress team for their astounding victory against Canada. In his statement, Enoh lauded the team for their historic feat, becoming the first African team to advance to the Olympic quarterfinals.
“Dear D’Tigress, today marks a historic achievement. By becoming the first African team, regardless of gender, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals, you have achieved a groundbreaking milestone,” Enoh commended.
“Despite being ranked 12th, you defeated FIBA’s 3rd and 5th teams, showcasing exceptional skill. Your triumph has brought joy to Nigerians and beyond.”
As D’Tigress gears up to face the United States this Wednesday in their pursuit of a semi-final berth, an air of palpable excitement surrounds the team, as they are poised to sustain their pursuit of excellence.
Their journey has been nothing short of extraordinary, and their conquest not only accentuates their diligence but also embodies the unwavering African spirit of determination.
This triumph irrefutably demonstrates that with courage, perseverance, and unity, every aspiration is within reach, and Africa’s prominence in the realm of sports is an unending saga.
